Visit Jaisalmer, the “Golden City” of India

The remote city of Jailsamer in India is where you must be headed if you want to explore artistic structures, temples and monuments, the reasons why it is a World Heritage Site.

For a city in India, Jaisalmer is one of the few cities in the country with a population not exceeding a hundred thousand. It covers a total area of 5.1 square kilometers and is nestled in the heart of the Thar Desert. The city was founded in 1156 AD by Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king. The only way to get into the city is by train, bus, or car from a number of cities including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur, and Ajmer. If you have weeks to spend traveling, you can take a 14 day trip camel ride from Bikaner!

Jaisalmer stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, used in building houses and edifices, which is why the city exudes a yellowish-golden tinge, thus the moniker the Golden City. The city is overshadowed by the Jaisalmer Fort also known as Sonar Qila, a living fort where there are hotels, shops, old houses still lived in by families, and a royal palace. The fort is surrounded by ninety-nine bastions. The city's top attractions include the Bada Bagh, Patwaon-Ki-Haveli, Jain Temples, Jaisalmer War Museum, Kuldhara Abandoned Village, The Thar Heritage Museum, Maharaja's Palace, Mandir Palace, and Tanot Mata Temple. You must not miss watching Queen Harish, a cross-dressing performer who is known for Rajasthan folk dances, who regularly performs in Jaisalmer, his hometown.
